Flower Garden Maintenance – Fertilize

Lots of gardeners do not fertilize. I did not fertilize a lot in my former gardens, but my soil is just not great in my new gardens. And, although I am working at amending the soil, I figure the flowering perennials need all the help they are able to get. I am actually surprised at what a difference fertilizing is actually making for the flower beds of mine.

I like this fertilizer! I am not actually getting paid for this little unsolicited commercial. I might get on a couple of cents in case you buy from the link of mine, but that is it. I simply like the stuff, and it has made a big difference in the flower gardens of mine. When I transplant or perhaps plant a new perennial, I just provide a small shake in the hole and mix it in with compost or perhaps the existing soil. On my existing plants, I simply create a great shake around the base of the plant and scratch it into the dirt. It is slow release, so it fertilizes for a handful of months. For annuals and containers, I just use Miracle-Gro or perhaps a similar fertilizer.

Flower Garden Maintenance – Mulch

In case you have not already done so, apply two – four inches of mulch to the gardens of yours. Seriously, just do it. It is not something you are able to bypass. To begin with mulch is actually as the icing on a cake – it is the finishing touch. Your flowers and plants will pop. The primary reason behind mulching though beside aesthetic, is actually for the all around health of the flower garden of yours. A great, fine shredded wood mulch is going to break down and help amend soil. It you cannot afford a decent wood mulch, use untreated grass clippings or perhaps shredded leaves.

Various other advantages of mulching:

Reduces winter injury
Helps with weed control
Helps keep moisture in the soil I have also read and I will share it here, but I cannot verify, that some mulch types as cypress, cedar or perhaps pine also repel fleas, gnats, and ticks.
I cannot recommend synthetic mulches (rock, pebbles, plastic, rubber chips, or perhaps dyed mulches) they really do nothing to promote soil health and most do not actually have some benefits, other than aesthetic.

Now you are all done mulching, step back and check out the overall effect – it is beautiful, is not it. These very same principles apply to vegetable gardens too. Although, to keep costs down, I generally mulch with untreated grass clippings in the veggie beds.

Flower Garden Maintenance – Water I am going to continue watering as easy as I can. There’s no hard fast rule when it comes to watering flowers (or vegetables), so here are some tips:

When planting new flowers, or perhaps transplants, I make sure they’re watered at least every other day.
New plantings benefit from deep soaking.
Once all the flowers are actually settled in and filling out, I slow watering to twice or once a week, based on the rain fall or perhaps lack thereof.
I have started using this rain gauge in my veggie beds, just to make sure I am watering enough. I water until the gauge reaches one inch and I do this twice a week in case we do not get rain. I’ve a cute rain gauge this way in just one of the flower beds of mine and it actually helps me know if I am watering enough.
Besides that, I water when the ground is actually dry. Essentially, I will walk around and stick my bare finger in the soil a couple of inches down, in case it is dry, it is time to water.
In the heat of the day, plant life will look wilted. That is completely normal.
The perfect time to water is actually in the morning. If that is not possible, early evening is actually good too.
I received this simple drip irrigation system as a gift last year and it is on my list to put in this year in my dry, shade bed. It is going to be an enormous time saver as well as one thing you might want to check.
I recently read the article and found it really interesting and included some really good watering tips for various soil types. Pop over when you have finished up here to look it over.
